CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Makoto Niijima
AGE: 17
CANON: Persona 5

CANON HISTORY: Wiki Link
CANON PERSONALITY: Makoto seems like the perfect girl. She's the student council president, her grades are impeccable, her sister is a high profile prosecutor, and her father was a high profile detective. She's smart, well mannered, and obedient for a teenager. Or, at least, that's how she seems.

In actuality, Makoto has a lot of rage bubbling underneath the surface that grows as she realizes the adults surrounding her are using her, and others, for their own selfish purposes, and not using their positions to help the people who most need the help. She at first agrees to investigate the Phantom Thieves, out of a belief that their ability to change hearts could be misused. But as she comes hotter on their trail, she has to be bribed by greater rewards, such as a plum college recommendation.

And even then, when she accidentally stumbles on a drug cartel that is blackmailing students and pulling them into a further life of crime, she ultimately decides to help the Phantom Thieves if they help her. She takes her position as student council president seriously, believing she has a responsibility because of the authority trusted in her to help students. And if the principal would rather use her talents to save his own skin, she has no qualms giving up the chance to go to any college she wants.

Makoto also has a strong desire to confront her problems head on, in a way that might be surprising if you look at her from only a surface level. While she uses indirect accusations to trick Ryuji, Ann, and Akira, into giving her the information she needs to close the Phantom Thieves case, her personality really shines through during her persona awakening. Her idea of a rebel is closer to the biker gangs-- and Johanna takes the form of a motorcycle.

Makoto also fights with her fists, and is prone to screaming in rage when she really gets going. Her end of battle line is literally, "FISTS OF JUSTICE!"

She was also affected by her father's death. While her sister dealt with the pressure by going into the most prestigious path she could think of related to the police force, Makoto eventually realizes that she wants to follow in his footsteps. She doesn't want to deal with helping behind the scenes or after the arrest has happened, like her sister. She wants to become chief of police and have an immediate impact for the people she's protecting.

However, because for so long she's presented in a more indirect and overly polite manner, relative to her true feelings, Makoto never really had friends. She was focused so intently on school that she missed most of the fads growing up, and had next to no interests outside of that. But after coming to terms with her true preferences, she starts to learn how to relate with others more directly.

She makes friends with people who would've been her polar opposite, and is able to use her abilities to protect those friends. Which is all she really wanted.

But outside of her base, driving instincts, while Makoto is relatively fearless, she's still scared of ghosts, and her interests trend towards the classical, to the nerdy. Her best gifts in game are the book cover, the classical hits CD, and the motorbike figure, each of which shows a little facet of her personality. She also shares an interest with a girl named Erika in pen cap figures that she hadn't seen since she was little.

Makoto also really, really excels at subterfuge. She tricks the Phantom Thieves into revealing their identity, she asks Akira to pretend to be her boyfriend so she can work out whether Erika's new Host Club boyfriend is trying to trap her into indentured servitude. But she can also be reckless with her gambits-- and she nearly gets herself and the Phantom Thieves trapped in the same drug cartel blackmail scheme that she's trying to stop.

She is easily flustered when it comes to personal questions, and militant when it comes to study sessions. As expected from the perfect student!
SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Hand to Hand Combat - Makoto fights with her fists
Persona (Johanna) - Makoto has a persona, and her emphasis is on nuclear abilities (Frei). She is weak to psychokinesis, however. But Johanna has a strong mix of offensive and defensive abilities-- though Makoto can't heal.
Sophisticated Student - As she's known before we get her name... Makoto is all about presentation, subterfuge, and being the perfect student. She's extremely smart, and quickly becomes the brains of the Phantom Thieves once she joins.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Makoto Niijima
AU AGE: 19
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: None!

AU HISTORY: In this world, both of Makoto's parents are alive... but divorced. Her mother was a nurse, and went to America, taking her older brother, Sakichi, with her. Their parents schedule had strained their relationship until they felt it was better to split. (This is with permission of Sakichi's player.) That left Makoto with her father and older sister. Her father was still a detective, but he wanted Makoto to have the best, despite the divorce.

So, Makoto went to a prestigious international school in Tokyo. She's fluent in English in a way she wasn't in canon. She received letters from her brother Sakichi, describing where he was, what he was doing, and doling out onii-chan style advice. Sakichi's letters inspired her to write her own, and so she's got quite the penpal network! She writes in English, or in Japanese, depending on what her penpals want, but it was a hobby that she took a lot of enjoyment in throughout her school career. She did have a couple of wayward boyfriends, like Keigo (with the player's permission), but was too distant to really commit to a relationship.

Which, like canon, she excelled at. She was the student council president in high school, and she was accepted to Tokyo Daigaku after graduating. However, because her father was alive, she never felt quite the same pressure to live up to his legacy as she did in canon, so she was able to explore other interests. She's not looking to go into law or law enforcement at all, and is instead focusing on anthropology.

She's been dying to meet her brother for years now, after growing up separate from him, and only really getting to know him through his letters. So, when the opportunity presented itself, she took a year-long study abroad trip to Recolle University. She hoped that she'd be able to both broaden her learning, and meet up with Sakichi, whom she mostly knew through letters.

This makes her a prolific letter writer-- and she's exchanged letters with Akira, Yukiko, Dia, etc... (All with permission of the players.)

But yes, she's ready to learn some Anthropology from American schools! And to deal with shenanigans from her two roommates, Orihime and Soleil (again with permission!).
AU PERSONALITY: Makoto's personality is not significantly different from her canon one. The main difference is that because her father is alive, she felt a little more freedom to explore her interests growing up, and so is not quite as distant. This also inspired her to take a slightly different study path than she was planning in canon.

She is exploring anthropology, instead of going for a degree for a criminal justice. It's also likely you couldn't get her to say, specifically, that she wants to be a chief of police. She's more likely to say she's still figuring it out and/or considering a path in academia.
